Getting you started on your IVF journey
At Burton Fertility we believe in making life as easy as possible. We do not insist on a letter of referral from your GP or Specialist to make an appointment although this may be helpful particularly if you have medical problems or a complicated history. By explaining the different steps in your treatment journey we'll make sure you're fully aware of what is involved and hope this will help address any concerns you may have. We also recommend that you attend one of our patient information evenings, held once a month in partnership with Nurture in Nottingham.
It is important to remember that not everyone follows the same journey as we tailor treatment to individual needs. If you have any questions or concerns please feel free to contact us for further advice.
Patients are referred to NURTURE's Clinical Director by either their general practitioner or consultant.
Full medical and surgical histories are taken and the most suitable treatment will be discussed.
Once you have had your initial investigations and your consultation, you are ready to book in to start your treatment.
Drugs are given by injection to stimulate more follicles to produce eggs.
Ultrasound scans and blood tests are carried out to decide the optimum time for egg recovery.
Nurture provides a diagnostic semen analysis service to both NHS and private patients.
Ultrasound views are used to guide the needle through the side of the vaginal wall into the ovarian follicles.
Natural or surgical sperm recovery samples are produced on the morning of egg collection.
Insemination of the Eggs
A concentration of the sperm will be mixed with the eggs and left to fertilise overnight in culture conditions.
Fertilisation, Division & Cleavage
16 hours after insemination, eggs are checked for signs of fertilisation and 24 hours later checked again for signs of cleavage.
Procedure takes approximately 15 minutes and patients are free to go home after a short rest.
A blood test to check for a pregnancy is carried out 16 days after embryo transfer.
Results and Decision-Making
A meeting is held to discuss individual patient's results and the next appropriate action.
